The Perfecto Shaving Brush: A Review

Ever since the days of shaving with a cut-throat razor honed with a strop, men have been trying to come up with ways to get a better shave. While there are countless methods, tools, and products available for your convenience, one of the most popular is the shaving brush.

Shaving brushes help increase the surface area that is exposed to wet shaving cream, which allows for a more thorough and efficient lather application. Additionally, a quality shaving brush helps you create an optimal lather by stimulating your skin and hair as you apply it to your face.

The market is flooded with many different types of brushes. Some are high-quality while others are low-quality knockoffs. It can be difficult to know which brands are worth buying and which ones you should not waste your money on.

Read on to learn more about what different types of shaving brushes exist and why the Perfecto Shaving Brush is a high-quality and budget-friendly option.

Note: As you might notice in the images, I also purchased a brush stand from Perfecto after trying their badger brush. I wasn’t even slightly disappointed by the quality.

What Is a Shaving Brush?

A shaving brush is a hand-held tool that is used to apply shaving cream and/or shaving soap to your face. The shaving brush is made of natural hair or synthetic fibers and has a handle that is used to apply the lather to your skin.

Technically, the shaving brush is not a “brush” in the traditional sense. It does not have bristles, and instead, it has a dense knot of hairs that are used to create a creamy lather. The shaving brush is the best method for applying thick lathered creams and soaps to the face before shaving.

Types of Shaving Brushes

  • Boar Bristle The most common type of brush. This type of brush typically has a badger hair knot and is made of boar bristles. Using a boar bristle brush creates an ultra-thick, creamy lather that is excellent for thick (or heavy) beards.
  • Horse Hair Horse hair brushes are made using hair from a horse’s mane and tail. These types of brushes are also cruelty-free as the hair is collected during grooming. Horse hair brushes tend to be more difficult to get a good lather with and can tangle easily but provide the most exfoliation.
  • Synthetic Synthetic brushes are made from synthetic materials such as nylon or polyester. They are also less dense than the boar bristle brushes but produce a luxurious lather that is great for sensitive skin.
  • Synthetic Bristle Synthetic bristle brushes are a hybrid between synthetic and boar bristle brushes. They use a mixture of natural and synthetic bristles and produce a medium-thick lather that is great for daily shaving.
  • Badger Bristle Badger bristle brushes are very similar to boar bristle brushes. Badger brushes become more and more efficient over time as they break in. After a few uses, badger bristles become fluffy, soft, and increasingly effective at lathering soaps and creams.

Breaking in my Perfecto Pure Badger Shaving Brush was also extremely quick compared to others I’ve tried in the past. I would say my brush was well broken in by my fourth time using it.

The only downside I see to this brush is that it has been losing a bristle every so often. Perfecto does advise against using hot water when shaving with the brush to avoid shedding – noted.

Conclusion

The Perfecto shaving brush is an excellent product for men who want an upgrade from the average boar bristle brush without breaking the bank. The shaving brush is seamless in design, stiffer than the average boar bristle brush, and has a long handle that is comfortable to hold for long periods of time.

I was very impressed with the short amount of time it took to break in the brush and the overall quality of the product was great. I would recommend Perfecto products to anyone who is in the market for wet shaving accessories.
